I can't make it to the meeting this month, so will give you my thoughts here. This is what I posted on Goodreads:
"Stargirl" first. Stargirl has to be one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. Love her!!! This story made me look at myself and why I do things. Do I let peer pressure influence my actions? (Peer pressure doesn't just exist in high school...it follows you through life!) My one difficulty with this book - of course - was when Leo turned his back on Stargirl. How could he be so weak and easily swayed? Stargirl deserved better! But then I realized that this was exactly how the average high school boy would act. SO very sad, but SO very true.
Now on to "Love, Stargirl". This is a truly wonderful book! Even better than it's companion, Stargirl. I loved hearing Stargirl tell her own story. (I was impressed that this was written by a man...he did a fantastic job of getting in the head of a teenage girl!) The writing was almost lyrical. The characters all seemed so real. I was REALLY glad that Stargirl didn't end up with Perry - that just wouldn't have been right! The end leaves hope that she and Leo get together again...in my imagination they do. :0)
I actually liked the first one better. I liked to hear it from Leo's perspective. Reading the second one took me a while to get into it. She didn't seem like the same character, (which is true, since it was taken from two very different perspectives) but I did enjoy all the varying characters. I was only disapointed that Leo didn't turn up at the end, but that's the sucker for romance inside me. I enjoyed them both, though. Good pick, Ila!
